Chapter 7: Implode

“Blaze?” My eyes shoot open and I immediately gasp, taking in as much air as I can. I reach for my gun beside me and quickly point it at the blur in front of me, my hand trembling, but hesitant to pull the trigger. Why? “Blaze, it’s me. Roc.”

“Roc…?” I answer back. It’s all coming back to me. What happened. I was hit with something. The Devil’s Embrace. The memories of that Hell…they’re clear as day, but everything else is still a bit shaky. Purge Knights. We were infiltrating their territory…trying to take out a witch. Sonya was hurt a few days back. I went with Roc for revenge. We found—

“Blaze? I’m your friend. Remember? Put the gun down. It’s me. Blaze?”

I lower the gun to the ground beside me and place my hand over my forehead, dealing with the echoes of pain from the massive headache I had before everything got blurry.

“Sorry.” A flash of a distorted memory of me getting eaten runs through my mind, but I ignore it. “Did we get him? WitchFire?”

“Yeah. I got him. I neutralized his magic and you came to not long after that.”

“How long was I out for?”

“A couple of minutes. Ten, maybe.”

Damn. Only ten? It felt like months. Closer to a year. There’s no way I could have survived for another ten. Even five more minutes would have been pushing it.

“Where’s WitchFire? I’d like to have a word with him.”

I stand to my feet and realize my balance is a bit off, but the feeling comes and goes before Roc can even notice. The damage is clearly beginning to mount up.

“Dealt with. I couldn’t take any chances. You and the other hunter were in a pinch…so I had to act fast.”

“The other hunter…right. How is he?” I ask, vaguely remembering trying to save him. “Did he make it?”

“Yeah. And then some. Reinforcements showed not long after I took out WitchFire. Martin was more than happy to watch our backs and return the favor for saving him.”

“Nice.” I direct my gaze at the man leaning against the opening of the tunnel, clearly injured, but doing his best not to be a burden. He catches me looking his way and he salutes. “So, did you get what you needed to?” I say after swiveling my head back towards Roc. Another flash from the embrace engulfs my vision, replacing the station with a dungeon where I was tortured by demons.

“Blaze?”

“Yeah?”

“You didn’t hear—are you okay?”

“I’m fine, just a bit dazed, still,” I retort. “Can you repeat what you just said? Sorry.” I shift uneasily.

“No,” Roc responds with a look of concern on his face. “Not everything. But enough. As soon as we get out of here, I’m going to see what Martin knows and compare information…which is right now. We have to get out of here before anyone else shows. Martin’s hurt and you’re—”

“I’m good. Or I will be soon. Just shaken up.”

“Okay.” Roc’s expression doesn’t change, but I know he knows to trust me.
